Science

At Brightside Primary School, we recognise that Science will play a key role in every pupil’s future. We recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life. It develops a natural curiosity and a respect for the natural world. We aim to ensure that every child is a scientist as outlined below.

Intent

Through the intentions outlined below, pupils will all be able to meet the main aims of the National Curriculum: develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Implementation

In order to carry out our intention, and to support the retention and new learning of knowledge and skills we will do the following:

-Teachers will follow a clear scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning should plan for practical investigative opportunities where possible.

-Pupils will be explicitly taught the key vocabulary linked to the science unit taught.

-Teacher will model on the board or flipchart to give pupils a clear and concise method, with annotations where appropriate, in order to ensure pupils have a guide to be successful

- Children will use a range of resources to develop their knowledge and understanding that is integral to their learning and develop their understanding of working scientifically.

-Teachers will provide feedback to the pupils through their use of verbal feedback.- Target tracker assessments will be recorded termly following informal assessments.

Impact

Impact of science teaching at Brightside will be clear as outcomes at the end of EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 will show progress for all pupils and will also be displayed as outlined below:
