Design & Technology
At Brightside Primary School, we aim to build a Design and Technology curriculum which is inspiring, rigorous and practical. We provide our pupils with the key skills and knowledge to gain an in-depth and critical understanding of how to master practical skills and share their individuality. We encourage pupils to design, make, evaluate and improve products, and take inspiration from design throughout history.
Intent
To ensure that pupils develop a secure knowledge that they can build upon, our Design and Technology curriculum is organised into a skills based progression model that outlines the skills, knowledge and vocabulary to be taught. Through the intentions outlined below, pupils will be able to meet the main aims of the National Curriculum:
Pupils will become confident, competent and independent at designing, making, evaluating and improving.
Pupils will develop an ability to discuss and explain their thinking using appropriate vocabulary.
Pupils will develop self confidence and teamwork skills.
Pupils will be confident that if they make errors they can be seen as a way to improve understanding.
Implementation
Our Design and Technology curriculum is progressive and follows a two year programme; each year skills build upon previous learning:
In Years 1, 3 and 5 pupils will be taught food, textiles and mechanics.
In Years 2, 4 and 6 pupils will be taught materials, computing and construction.
Teachers will model explicitly the subject-specific vocabulary,
Pupils will be given a variety of experiences, to create memorable learning opportunities and to further support and develop their understanding.
To embed knowledge further, teachers will make links with other subjects.
Teachers will provide assessment for learning through verbal feedback.
Interventions for pupils will take place on a need-by-need basis in order to ensure that students are able to make progress at their own level.
Impact
The impact of Design and Technology teaching at Brightside will ensure pupils have gained knowledge and understanding of the different skills and techniques required to problem solve by designing, creating and evaluating a variety of products using a safe approach.
Pupils will be confident and able to talk about what they have learnt, making links to previously studied topics.
Pupils will have an understanding of the importance of skills learnt in other areas of the curriculum and how they aid the design and make process.
Pupils can use subject-specific vocabulary and communicate with a critical mind.
Pupils will be confident to ask questions to further their understanding.
Pupils will have an understanding of how the techniques and skills taught in Design and Technology will aid them in future life and learning.
We assess through teacher assessment and evidence which captures pupils' progress.
