Through the intentions outlined below, pupils will all be able to meet the main aims of the National Curriculum: write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
Pupils will become confident, competent and independent writers.
Pupils will have a solid understanding of grammar and apply it effectively to their writing.
Pupils will write with the reader in mind with a clear and conscious control over their writing.
‘Talk for Writing’ is one of the tools/strategies used throughout the school to support the teaching of writing. When teaching full tales, we use an imitation, innovation and invention approach.
Writer toolkits are used to ensure children are confident with the genre/ grammar features they need to use within their writing.
Writing processes and ‘writer talk’ will be modelled by the teacher during shared writing/ modelling sessions. Authorial intent is modelled during these sessions so children are encouraged to use precise and purposeful choices.
Model texts/ WAGOLLs are used for specific writing units which aim to demonstrate to the children the language techniques which are to be taught and developed.
Pupils develop their independent writing skills through the use of frequent ‘short-burst writing’.
Pupils are given real-time verbal feedback within lessons in order for their writing to progress. Learning conferences may be used as a more formal tool to give feedback.
