Geography
At Brightside Primary School, we aim to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world around them. We provide our students with the geographical skills and fieldwork to investigate places and patterns in human and physical geography. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes.
Intent
To ensure that pupils develop a secure knowledge that they can build upon, our Geography curriculum is organised into a progression model that outlines the skills, knowledge and vocabulary to be taught. Through the intentions outlined below, pupils will be able to meet the main aims of the National Curriculum:
Pupils will use geographical skills and fieldwork and will be able to use them in a range of contexts.
Pupils will investigate places and patterns to compare similarities and differences between countries.
Pupils will develop their geographical knowledge (locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography).
Implementation
Our Geography curriculum is progressive; each year, skills build upon previous learning and will be taught in the following ways:
Teachers will model explicitly the subject-specific vocabulary and impart knowledge to develop understanding using a multi-sensory approach.
Pupils will be given a variety of experiences, both in and out of the classroom, to create memorable learning opportunities and to further support and develop their understanding.
Where appropriate, we use map and fieldwork along with data collection to give first hand experiences; enhancing their understanding of the world.
To embed knowledge further, teachers will make links with other subjects.
Impact
The teaching of Geography at Brightside will ensure pupils adopt the skills of a geographer by fully immersing them in all areas of the subject, whilst respectfully caring for the environment
Pupils will be able to talk about what they have learnt, making links to previously studied topics.
Pupils can understand and use subject-specific vocabulary to communicate confidently.
Pupils will further their understanding through inquisitive questioning.
