History
At Brightside Primary School, we aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. We provide our students with the key skills and knowledge to gain an in-depth and critical understanding of how Britain has influenced, and been influenced by, the wider world. We encourage pupils to evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources and have a good chronology awareness of the past.
Intent
To ensure that pupils develop a secure knowledge that they can build upon, our History curriculum is organised into a progression model that outlines the skills, knowledge and vocabulary to be taught. Through the intentions outlined below, pupils will be able to meet the main aims of the National Curriculum:
Pupils will be inspired to investigate and interpret the past
Pupils will build an overview of world history
Pupils will develop an understanding of chronology
Pupils will be confident in communicating historically
Implementation
Our History curriculum is progressive; each year, skills build upon previous learning and will be taught in the following ways:
Teachers will model explicitly the subject-specific vocabulary,
Pupils will be given a variety of experiences, both in and out of the classroom, to create memorable learning opportunities and to further support and develop their understanding.
Where appropriate, we use historical artefacts, visitors, workshops and visits to excite our children and provide a variety of approaches.
To embed knowledge further, teachers will make links with other subjects.
Impact
The impact of History teaching at Brightside will ensure pupils enjoy exploring the past and are able to recall their learning over time.
Pupils will be confident and able to talk about what they have learnt, making links to previously studied topics.
Pupils can use subject-specific vocabulary and communicate with a critical mind.
Pupils will be confident to ask questions to further their understanding
