To ensure that pupils develop a secure knowledge that they can build on, our Music curriculum is organised into a progression model that outlines the skills, knowledge and vocabulary to be taught in a sequentially coherent way.
Pupils will become confident, competent and independent musicians.
Pupils will develop an ability to discuss and explain their thinking using appropriate musical vocabulary.
Pupils will be confident that if they make errors they can be seen as a way to improve understanding.
In order to fulfil our intentions, and further ensure the quality and consistency of Music teaching across our school, we follow the schools skills based curriculum, which is supported by using the following resources - Charanga, BBC Ten Pieces and Chrome Music Lab. Through using the skills based curriculum, this will enable Teachers to ensure a cumulative approach to learning over pupils time at Brightside.
All pupils will have opportunities to play untuned and tuned instruments.
Through singing songs, and a range of other methods, pupils learn about the structure and organisation of music.
Pupils will develop self confidence and teamwork skills through performance. They will have opportunities to sing as a class and in smaller groups.
Pupils will learn to read and write stave notation, increasing their understanding of rhythmic and melodic notation.
Pupils will listen to, review and evaluate a range of music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including contemporary music and use subject specific vocab relating to the musical elements: instrumentation, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, texture, structure and melody.
The curriculum is supplemented through the offer of peripatetic Music lessons.
Teachers will provide assessment for learning through verbal feedback.
Interventions for pupils will take place on a need-by-need basis in order to ensure that students are able to make progress at their own level.
All pupils will benefit from a high quality music education which engages and inspires them to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians.
Following the curriculum will increase their self-confidence, creativity and a sense of achievement.
As pupils progress, they will develop a growing musical vocabulary that allows them to critically engage with music.
Teaching and learning of Music is a reflective process for the pupils as they are given opportunities to assess themselves and their peers.
We assess through teacher assessment, pictures and video evidence which captures pupils' progress.
